Can companies and corporations withhold information concerning financial dealings?

Upon asking a jewellery store who they purchase their gold from, they responded that they're not allowed to disclose that information. Is this true? Is there a law in Canada or the US that requires companies to divulge information like this?Can companies and corporations withhold information concerning financial dealings?If there is, which i highly doubt, there shouldn't be.
