I think burp cloths are one of those nice gimmick items that parents think they "need" because they are sold in the baby department with real necessities. For my now three-year-old and my four-month-old, I use rags, old washcloths and old towels. Why buy something new that is just going to get stained and soiled? (Well, we bought new cloth diapers, of course.)
ETA: For a baby gift with my first baby I received the pre-fold cloth diapers with ribbon trim on the inner seams. I would probably use a soft material. Not too rough yet durable.
