How do you find information on family members that pasted away years ago?

I am looking for information about my grandparents that passed away before i was born. They lived in Indiana and not sure where to start looking. How do you find information on family members that pasted away years ago?If they died after 1961, they're probably listed on the Social Security Death Index. It would give you a date to use as you start your search.

From there, check one of the two sites that tries to index most of the burials in this country. Note that their job isn't complete, but there a decent chance you'll find them there:

http://www.interment.net and http://www.findagrave.com

If that doesn't work, go to library in the town where they last lived. Start reading through obituaries until you find something on them. Going from there, visit the County Clerk's office or Vital Records office and pull a copy of each death certificate. At the bottom, it should note both the name of the funeral director and the place of burial.

If you live too far to visit the county in Indiana, consider using the volunteers on the US GenWeb project. Go to this site and click on the county where they lived. You should find some very well-versed volunteers. http://www.ingenweb.org/ingen_county.htmHow do you find information on family members that pasted away years ago?
Go to indiana's health department/records department or look it up online and see if they have old records. You can also ask parents and other family members. How do you find information on family members that pasted away years ago?Try to get as much information as you can from family members. See if you can find out where they lived at a specific time, full names, etc.

Then check at the library -- you may have access to census data there (mine has that). You can do searches pretty easily.

Once you get that, start plugging names into search engines. "John Doe" and "Mary Smith" will work. You may get lucky if the names aren't common. There are a lot of family trees on line.

Finally, if you can get some information, try joining one of the genealogy sites like ancestry.com. It has suggestions and records for people once you join, and it can be a huge help.

Good luck. How do you find information on family members that pasted away years ago?
Depending on your available resources (i.e., money), you can either hire a geneologist, or just start with family names and search online. Interview anyone that may have known them and go from there. Especially any living family members that knew them, neighborhood friends, places they worked, anything you know or can find out about them. If you know the county or counties they lived in, you could search property and marriage records, birth records of their children you know of, etc...those records are usually open to the public, but there might be a fee. Good luck! How do you find information on family members that pasted away years ago?Research is through historical records, such as in libraries, government files, genealogical pages, etc. The EXACT record you will use depends on (full) name/ date/ place.

I have to assume your parents have some idea of where/when their parents died?? And yes, it is an assumption... we don't all have that info. Your parents birth certifcates will show their names, however.

here is one guide to starting (there are many more)

Also, I always suggest www.cyndislist.com as a place to bookmark... it is the largest collection of research resources.

Once you get back to family that was born pre 1930, they should be in census records (taken every 10 yrs). How do you find information on family members that pasted away years ago?

Call the local library near where they died, and talk to someone in the Necrology dept. They will be able to help you with regard to a death notice, from there you should be able to obtain an obituary notice and from there you may be able to apply for death, birth and marriage records, in some places, you will have to reference the Right to Know act and be a direct descendant of the person before they will give you any info and provide a copy of your ID. Also, try the state genealogy project website, you can get a lot of info there and from Historical Societies as well, you would be surprised at the information they have.

Go here:

PS Check out that first link I listed - there's some good stuff there, but here's the link for the Indiana Project.

Happy hunting!

Edit: a note on census - most of the census records have lots of spelling errors, while the census takers could read and write, a lot of them couldn't spell, also illiteracy was a big problem in the early 1900's, and more people than you would think, did not know how to spell there last names. It took me over 2 years of searching for my GM in the 1930 census, to find her, and her mother in 1920 (her name was misspelled as Ricky - it was really Ritchey, I found it under her married sister and brother-in-law's names! Make sure you try lots and lots of different spellings, even in the same census and same household, (ie siblings).
