How to prevent secret information from getting stolen over internet?

Exactly how is private information filled in an online form is stolen and how can it be prevented? Suppose someone is typing one's bank account login and password to log in and transact. How can one make sure that third party fail to get the login and password?

Can this happen in linux operating system also? Since I am using linux OS, it would be great if you answer from a Linux-user's point of view. Normally as Windows OS is widely used more number of keyloggers for this OS is easily available in the market. But Linux is rarely used whan compared to Windows Hence key loggers for this OS is bit rare. But this doesn't mean that it is not possible. But the security features in Linux are more.

The best way to avoid this - not using public computers or networks for banking type transactions %26amp; installing good anti hack anti spam anti spywares in the PC like Nortan 360 ver 5 etc.. Since you use Linux, you probably also use Firefox. If not, get it. Then get the HTTPS: Everywhere addon. That will help a lot. But it's still possible for some fool at some bank to leave your account info exposed to public gawking. That happens quite often. How to prevent secret information from getting stolen over internet?
